President Donald Trump issued a kind of response after former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said he would consider running for president again, even if Trump seeks the Republican nomination in 2024.
The former Republican governor told broadcaster Hugh Hewitt on Monday that he would not rule out running for president again in 2024 – even if Trump decides to run for reelection in four years. Christie highlighted several Trump campaign errors that led to his defeat for President-elect Joe Biden and asked the president to attend Biden’s inauguration on January 20, despite being disappointed by his defeat.
Amid suggesting Saturday morning that Afghanistan holds elections that are “much safer and better than those in the United States,” Trump shared a tweet from conservative author Brigitte Gabriel and seemed to rebuke Christie’s aspirations for 2024. Christie gave up on 2016 presidential campaign in February of that year, after a poor performance in the New Hampshire Republican Party primaries – a competition that Trump won before defeating Hillary Clinton in the November general election.
“The American people just want President Trump!” Gabriel tweeted, sharing a link to Hewitt’s radio interview with Christie last week.
Trump hesitated among suggestions that he will run for re-election in 2024 alongside comments that he does not plan to leave the White House next month, citing baseless allegations of “electoral fraud”.
“If President Trump decides to run in 2024, are you ruling out running against him?” Hewitt asked Christie during the conversation.
“I don’t, no,” Christie replied, before clarifying, “I wouldn’t rule that out, Hugh.”
Christie said she doubts Trump will attend Biden’s inauguration ceremony next month. He also criticized the president for doing “almost the opposite” of what the two had practiced before Trump’s presidential debate with Biden in September. Christie noted that he, Trump and former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway had at least six or seven practice sessions before the president’s combative action in the first debate.
