WASHINGTON (AP) – Former President Donald Trump on Thursday defended some of his supporters who protested at the US Capitol on January 6, saying they posed a “zero threat” to lawmakers who met there to certify the vote. of the Electoral College that confirmed Joe Victory of Biden in the presidential race.
Trump complained to Laura Ingraham of the Fox News Channel that the police were “chasing” Capitol protesters, while “nothing happens” to left-wing protesters.
Trump acknowledged that those who invaded the Capitol “came in and shouldn’t have done that.”
But he added: “Some of them have come in and are, they are hugging and kissing the police and the guards. You know, they had great relationships. Many people waved in and then went in and out. “
More than 300 people were indicted for the riot. Authorities said they believed at least 100 more could face charges.
The January 6 riot followed a violent demonstration by Trump outside the White House, in which he urged a crowd of his supporters to “fight like hell” for him on Capitol Hill. A week later, the House accused Trump a second time, but the Senate eventually absolved him of the charge of inciting the attack.
