President Donald Trump criticized major U.S. lifestyle magazines for not giving his wife, Melania Trump, a single cover while he was in office.
In a tweet on Friday, Trump called the first lady “the greatest of all time”, while tweeting a post from Breitbart that said “elitist snobs in the fashion press” were condemning the “most elegant first lady” of American history “.
“Fake news!” Added Trump.
Trump fans have long noticed and deplored the absence of the first lady on U.S. newsstands, and often accused the US press of revealing their liberal bias by giving Michelle Obama, the wife of former President Barack Obama, 12 magazine covers in his two terms as First Lady, including three Vogue covers.
“If you need any more proof of the blatant bias of the dominant liberal media, the most impressive first lady in American history has never appeared on the main covers of our country’s style magazines,” said American actor and Trump supporter James Woods tweeted in February 2020.
Several major fashion magazines have taken a political stance towards the president, especially Vogue.
In an April 2019 interview with CNN, Vogue editor Anna Wintour said, “You have to stand up for what you believe in and have a point of view.”
However, Melania Trump drew criticism from Vogue readers and magazine editors in February of this year about the comments she made during a private phone call that leaked about Wintour’s decision to let Beyoncé edit an edition of the magazine.
“Anna gave the September issue of the cover of Vogue – complete, complete, complete, everything – to Beyoncé,” said the first lady in the July 2018 conference call, leaked to NBC.
“She hired photographer Black. And she is the first Black photographer to make a cover for Vogue.”
The president himself also expressed his personal disgust for TIME magazine, which is called “Person of the Year” each year.
TIME named Trump “Person of the Year” in 2016, but the president questioned the magazine’s choice of Greta Thunberg for the 2019 edition of the award.
