Trinidadian man injured by explosive device found in suspicious packaging

TRINIDAD, Colorado (KKTV) – A Colorado man was seriously injured after a package exploded in a parking lot on Monday morning.

According to Trinidad police, the victim and a friend were at Trinidad Apartments, at block 300 on East North Avenue, around 1 am, when they saw a package in an empty parking lot.

“[The victim] picked up the package and walked with it. [The victim] then he opened the package and there was an explosion, ”wrote the police in a press release.

The victim was rushed to the hospital and has since been transferred to another Colorado hospital via Flight for Life. He was identified as Diego Hurtado. The man with Hurtado was not hurt.

The incident is being investigated by the Trinidad Police Department, the Pueblo Police Department’s anti-bomb squad and the ATF. Anyone with information about the incident should call the TPD at 719-846-4441, ATF at 1-888-ATF-BOMB or email [email protected].

A separate but similar incident at Trinidad Walmart on February 5 is also under investigation. A package was discovered in the store’s parking lot; the police would not go into details.
