Trademarks of Square Enix Ever Crisis, The Last Soldier and other Final Fantasy VII names – but what do they mean?

Square Enix introduced a bunch of new trademarks that sure seem to have a lot to do with the world of Final Fantasy VII.

Trademarks were registered in Japan for the titles’Ever Crisis‘and’The first soldier‘. In addition, a trademark was also registered for the FF7 Shinra Electric Power Company in-universe logo. The trademarks were captured by Gematsu personnel.

These three trademarks following the success of Final Fantasy VII Remake – the winner of the Site RPG’s 2020 best overall award – may not be so surprising. The trademark of the Shinra logo is simpler; after all, this logo is often used in branding and merchandise. But titles, in particular, raise tempting questions – as to what they really are for.

Ever Crisis it is a project name with obvious connotations. The Final Fantasy VII Compilation features titles in alphabetical order. There is the FF7 spin-off film, Advent Children, the Turks mobile game Before Crisis, the prequel PSP Crisis Core and the PS2 sequel Dirge of Cerberus. They are AC, BC, CC and DC – and now, with Ever Crisis, we have a trademark for what appears to be a new Final Fantasy VII Compilation title in EC.

Ever Crisis could, of course, be the subtitle for the second part of the FF7 Remake. But honestly, we think this is far from certain – especially since the title ‘EC’ makes it look and sound more like another entry in the compilation. Now we know that the remake is related to the build and is even considered the fifth part of the build, so it is possible. The choice of the word ‘Always’ in the name is interesting and for us immediately brings to mind the idea of something always present or eternal; it would be an ideal name for a multiplayer or service-based game in the FF7 universe scenario.

There is one more slightly crazy alternative. The last stages of FF7 Remake reveal its true nature as a story that is not only a remake, but also an FF7 sequence. After the release, director Tetsuya Nomura referred to it as the fifth entry in the Final Fantasy VII Compilation. We know that the game will be released on platforms other than PlayStation 4 as soon as the one-year exclusivity window expires. Could this game launch have the subtitle ‘Ever Crisis’, a nod to its true nature, now that the secret is there?

Given that it is the right time with these other trademark registrations obviously related to FF7, The first soldier it is not the name that seems generic, of course, referring to the Elite of Shinra, a genetically enhanced superhuman military group within the FF7 world. Based on the general meaning of SOLDIER as described in FF7, the identity of the ‘first’ SOLDIER is quite obvious: it is Sephiroth. He was the first to receive the Jenova Project cells.

However, within the FF7 tradition, the SOLDIER program is actually mentioned as existing in some way before Sephiroth – for example, Final Fantasy VII Ultimania mentions the SOLDIER forces being used in the Wutai War, and on other occasions before the existence of the Project Jenova. However, these same books also make it clear that Sephiroth is the first Jenova-enhanced SOLDIER that exists. Could it be a game, anime or other story that tells the origins of Sephiroth? Of course, only time will tell – and before that, we have a PC version of FF7 Remake and next generation, yet to be announced, but inevitable, to wait for the first time – hopefully in a matter of months.

Meanwhile, fans can now feverishly speculate about what these trademark names might mean.

If we were making a prediction, however, it would probably be a new and exclusive FF7 build title, possibly multiplayer, to be released around FF7 Remake 2, and some type of anime or CG movie telling Sephiroth’s origin story. but it’s strictly us throwing ideas away. And now you can too!
