The Toyota GR Yaris is a banned fruit in the United States, despite being one of the most praised hot hatches in years. In this video, Carwow takes one and challenges it against the latest iteration of the Mini John Cooper Works GP, which US folks can get.
The Toyota has a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 257 horsepower (192 kilowatts) and 266 pound-feet (360 Newton-meters) of torque. It goes through a six-speed manual for a four-wheel drive system. This has the optional package that adds Torsen limited slip differentials to both axles. It’s a powerful little package.

In comparison, the Mini GP has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 302 hp (225 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. An eight-speed automatic firearm sends power to the front wheels and an integrated mechanical differential lock manages power from side to side.
Things start with a race from scratch. The Yaris’ all-wheel drive system gives you a head start on the wet track, but it doesn’t last long. The Mini GP slowly makes up the difference and eventually takes the lead.
Then there are several races in a row, and these races really show the strengths of the Mini’s automatic transmission. It slows down gears quickly, which allows the engine to reach the peak of the power range quickly. Toyota cannot do anything to keep up.
Finally, there is a brake test to see which car stops at a shorter distance. Despite its higher weight than the Mini, Toyota has some impressive locks and manages to score a victory in this test.
Mini is building just 3,000 units of the new GP worldwide. Assuming you can still find one in the US, prices start at $ 44,900.
