Tornado emergency leaves extensive damage in Newnan – WSB-TV Channel 2

Coweta County residents are waking up to widespread damage, felled trees and heavily damaged or destroyed homes.

At one point, the National Weather Service issued a tornado emergency to the city of Newnan early Friday morning.

We have teams spread across the subway in the areas most affected by storms. Stay with WSBTV.com and tune in to Channel 2 Action News This Morning from 4:30 am while we assess the damage done to our area.

Severe Weather Team 2, Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns and Meteorologist Brad Nitz tracked the storm LIVE as the line of dangerous storms moved from Alabama to the Atlanta subway.

In a tweet, the city of Newnan said: “The city has suffered major damage in and around the historic center due to tonight’s weather.”

Several viewers contacted Channel 2 Action News and said that Newnan High School suffered significant damage. A tweet on the school’s bill said the school would be closed on Friday for the entire county. The sheriff’s office asked people with chainsaws to meet at the school to help cut down the trees. Neighboring schools in Heard County are also closed because of storm damage.

Viewers sent photos to Channel 2 Action News showing trees across the city, walls and roofs partly uprooted from houses and trees through buildings.

Justin Wilfon from channel 2 arrived in Newnan around 1:30 am and found little damage in the town square, but clearly there was no power in the area.

Wilfon said it looked like most of the worst damage he saw occurred in the neighborhoods to the right of the square.
