Spider-Man: no way home was officially announced as the third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, co-produced by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. There was a time when the studios broke up and it looked like Tom Holland can be done by playing the webslinger, but luckily they worked things out. However, the actor confirmed that Spider-Man: no way home it will be the last film under his Sony / Marvel contract, but that doesn’t mean he stopped crawling.
Collider recently spoke to Tom Holland in conjunction with the upcoming release of Cherry on Apple TV +. The conversation ended up going back to the new Spider man film, which Holland confirmed to be the last film of his contract. But that does not necessarily mean that he is moving away from the role. The actor said:
“[Spider-Man 3] it would be my last [under contract]. So, I always told them that if they want me back I’ll be there in a heartbeat. I loved every minute of being part of this incredible world. It changed my life for the better, I’m very lucky to be here. If they want me back, I will be there; if you don’t want to, I’m going to walk until sunset like a very, very happy person because it’s been an incredible journey.
However, this probably does not fully necessary. At the time Sony and Marvel resolved their problems and entered into a new deal to split Spider-Man over a third film in the franchise, the deal also included an appearance in “a future Marvel Studios movie” outside of that. Based on the rumors we heard about Spider-Man: no way home making Multiverse a big part of Peter Parker’s story, it’s likely that the appearance is in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So when Tom Holland says No Way Home is the last Spider man film under its current contract, it probably means for the Spidey franchise alone.
While Tom Holland is eager to continue playing Spider-Man in the future, let’s not forget that the deal for Marvel and Sony to share Spider-Man is almost over. So, will it be so easy to negotiate a new contract that will allow Tom Holland to continue playing Peter Parker and his alter ego webhead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The Netherlands seems to think so:
“As I understand it, the agreement between the two studios has already happened. I don’t think they will have the same problems they faced when we were entering … was it Spider-Man 2? Away from home he left and then everything happened between Sony and Marvel. I think the two studios solved that, and I don’t think that will be a problem in the future. That said, I am just the actor and participated in some phone calls during this process. But I think they love working with each other, I think they’ve found a way in which it can be beneficial for both studios, and I’m like a child in the middle of it, between two parents during an argument. “
There is also a chance that Tom Holland will continue to throw Spider-Man out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some theorized that the introduction of the Multiverse would allow Peter Parker to leave the MCU and enter the Spider-Man universe created by Sony Pictures, which includes Poison It is the next Morbius. It would be the perfect opportunity to have two different universes with the same Spider-Man and still allow him to appear in any of them.
Even though Tom Holland is happy to continue playing Spider-Man, don’t expect the webslinger’s adventure to be a quick follow-up to No Way Home. The actor has been so busy since he did Spider-Man: Homecoming that he’s ready to take a break from acting a little bit. Holland recently told USA Today:
“I’m going to take a break and travel the world. It’s the first time since I signed [Spider-Man: Homecoming] that I don’t have a contract with anyone. I can go skiing because that is something that I was not really allowed to do, because it is obviously a dangerous sport. I have been very careful over the years, which is why I became obsessed with golf, because it is the only sport I can practice without getting hurt. “
This is something that fans don’t normally think of when it comes to actors being part of these big franchises. Studios have an investment in these stars to play revenue-generating characters, so they need to be safe in everything they do to protect the franchise from falling by the wayside. But it is good to know that the Netherlands will take some time to rest. Hopefully, when he is ready to get back to work, Marvel and / or Sony will be ready to put Spider-Man back into action.
