Tom Holland says he had an irrational fear of being fired by Marvel after filming “Captain America: Civil War”.

“From the moment of filming ‘Civil War’ to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, I was convinced that they would fire me. I don’t know why,” Holland said during a conversation with Daniel Kaluuya for Variety’s “Actors on the series Actors “.

During the interview, Holland talked about the exhausting audition process that went into the role of Spider-Man / Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“It was seven months of testing,” said the actor. “I must have done six tests, and they don’t say anything to you.”

Eventually, he did a screen test with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man / Tony Stark) and a fight scene with Chris Evans (Captain America / Steve Rogers). After discovering that he got the part, Holland spent about a week filming “Civil War”, which marked his first appearance at the MCU.

“I finished the movie, ‘Civil War’ still hasn’t come out and I just haven’t heard anything from anyone,” Holland told Kaluuya, concerned that he would be fired.

“I was convinced for about a year that they were going to fire me,” he said. “I don’t know why. I can’t explain it. It was awful, but they don’t – obviously.”

Holland starred in “Homecoming”, his first standalone superhero film, in 2017. He received rave reviews for his role as the teenage webslinger and reprized his role in the 2019 sequel entitled “Spider-Man: Away from Home”.

He also starred in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”. Then he will return as Spider-Man for a third independent film.

“It’s been crazy, man,” Holland told Kaluuya of his experience at Marvel. “It’s been the wildest roller coaster, but I loved it. I loved every minute of it. It’s been amazing.”
