“I loved every minute of being part of this incredible world.”
Spider-Man: no way home starring Tom Holland doesn’t hit theaters until December, but fans are already wondering if this could be the end of the road for Dutchman Peter Parker. In fact, the last two franchises saw Tobey Maguire knocking out after three films and Andrew Garfield only managing to make two, but the Netherlands is in a unique position in the sense that the Marvel Studios / Sony Pictures deal allowed him not only to lead his own Spider man films, but also make impactful supportive twists on MCU films like Captain America Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
So when Collider Steve Weintraub himself spoke to Holland during press day for his new film Cherry, he asked the actor if he was under contract for any Spider man past movies Spider-Man 3, and Holland revealed that his contract ended after this movie – but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to hang up his suit:
“[Spider-Man 3] it would be my last [under contract] so i always told them that if they want me back i’ll be there in a heartbeat. I loved every minute of being part of this incredible world. It changed my life for the better, I’m very lucky to be here. If they want me back, I will be there; if you don’t want to, I’m going to walk until sunset like a very, very happy person because it’s been an incredible journey.
For a brief moment, Holland was almost out of the MCU when negotiations were interrupted between Marvel and Sony after Spider-Man: away from home It was released. The agreement between the two studios for the first two Spider man The cinema was unprecedented, with Marvel Studios taking creative leadership, while Sony distributed the film and reaped most of the profits. Holland was credited with helping to bring the two studios together again to Spider-Man 3, and he said during our interview that, as he understands, the agreement that they made Spider-Man: no way home prevents any break in future negotiations between Marvel and Sony. So, if one Spider-Man 4 happened, they wouldn’t have to fill that gap again:
“As I understand it, the agreement between the two studios has already happened. I don’t think they will have the same problems they faced when we were entering … was it ‘Spider-Man 2’? ‘Far from Home’ was out and then the whole thing happened between Sony and Marvel. I think the two studios solved that, and I don’t think that will be a problem in the future. That said, I’m just the actor and I participated in a few phone calls during that process, but I think they love working with each other, I think they’ve found a way in which it can be beneficial for both studios, and I’m like a kid in the middle in addition, between two parents during an argument (laughs). ”
In fact, the agreement between Marvel and Sony now provides for Disney / Marvel to co-finance 25% of the Spider-Man 3 for a 25% equity stake, and also required at least one more appearance of Spider-Man in a future Disney / Marvel film.
So will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies continue? In 2017, the Netherlands said that Spider-Man: Homecoming it was the beginning of a planned trilogy, and already director Jon Watts – who directed all three films – was announced as the director of the next Marvel film The fantastic four restart, so it looks like Watts will continue. It is possible that the Netherlands has a suggestion of Robert Downey Jr. who went on to co-star and support MCU roles after Iron Man 3, but again Sony all this complicates things here. Those Spider man movies do much of money, so someone imagines that, contrary to previous attempts to bring the webslinger to the screen, they will see that it has not yet run out of breath and may be interested in doing Spider-Man 4 happen.
That’s still a long way off, but at least we know the Netherlands wants to keep playing Spider-Man as long as Sony and Marvel want to keep doing Spider man films.
Soon, see our full interview with Holland on Collider.
