The appeal of Tom Holland’s common man is undeniable; is a big part of what made the British actor such a convincing version of Marvel’s most unfortunate hero, Peter Parker. We can now add another data point to “He’s like normal people!” credentials: the revelation that he discovered that he had been cast in the role of Spider-Man in the same way as all of us: reading a post on the Marvel.com blog
This comes from a recent interview Holland did with ex-MCU colleague Daniel Kaluuya (currently starring in the next Judas and the Black Messiah) as part of Varietyof the Actors On Actors interview series. Between talking about his golf game and Kaluuya’s movie-watching habits, Holland revealed the unlikely way to find out that he had gotten the role he spent the previous year of his life auditioning for, that is, seeing a Marvel post about this on Instagram, and then clicking on a blog with his face.
Given the life-changing role it has been, it’s hard to blame Holland for what he did next: Get the computer out of bed, scare the dog and then ran to tell his family, including his brother, who voiced the whole thing So unlikely that he would assume he was part of Sony’s then-growing hacker scandal. But no: Marvel really did tell the whole world before told Holland, probably because you can only get Mark Ruffalo in these great movie secrets so many times.
You can see the rest of the interview, which also shows Holland and Kaluuya reflecting on cherry, Fred Hampton, Ryan Coogler and more, in Variety.
