Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes have already faced each other four times, sharing the games. The biggest win in their head-to-head matches so far obviously came two years ago, when the Patriots defeated the Chiefs in overtime in the AFC Championship Game.
After the Patriots ’37-31 victory, Brady went to the Chiefs’ locker room to speak to Mahomes.
“Well, I would say it was unique,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, through Charles Goldman of USA today. “I mean, he didn’t have to do that. He’s arguably the best defender he’s ever played, and he certainly didn’t have to come and say a word. But he did it, and I think for a young quarterback to have someone of his stature to do that, I think it was a tremendous and sincere gesture. He didn’t have to do that, and he wasn’t putting on a show. There was no one there to actually see it, so it was just his respect for Pat and, in return, Pat’s respect for him. “
Mahomes, who was 6 ½ years old when Brady won his first Super Bowl, said Brady offered words of encouragement.
“Yes, it kind of emphasized again that I was doing things right,” said Mahomes. “That I was doing the right job and that I would have more opportunities to be in those games. I have been lucky to be in two more of them since then and win both. “
Brady will play in his 10th Super Bowl and Mahomes in his second, giving the Chiefs’ quarterback a chance to eventually catch Brady.
