The most memorable moment in the celebration of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after winning the Super Bowl was the decision by quarterback Tom Brady to play the Lombardi Trophy from one boat to another during the parade.
Although it was memorable for everyone who watched, the man who threw the trophy does not have such a clear memory of the decision.
“I don’t remember that so well!” Brady said with a laugh during an interview with James Corden at Afternoon, Afternoon Show on Tuesday.
Brady was clearly enjoying the festivities when he seemed to think it was a good idea to send the trophy out in the open water to teammates on a neighboring boat. The privateers’ tight end, Cameron Brate, took the trophy on the other side to avoid the potential disaster of the trophy falling into the bay.
“First of all, I wasn’t thinking about that moment. It was not a thought. It was, ‘That sounds like a lot of fun to do,’ ”Brady described. “Not to mention that when you get your hands on one of these trophies, there are a lot of sharp points at the bottom. … I found out later, if it was an incomplete pass, it would have dropped about 80 feet. I’m so happy that Cam [caught it]. “
Via Jenna Laine of ESPN.com, the Buccaneers would have asked for a replacement trophy if the first had ended up in Davy Jones’ closet instead of a showcase at the team’s headquarters.
