The continuing chiefs may remain for several administrations, but Harleth’s resignation came as no surprise to several sources within the White House.
Reid was the ninth doorman at the White House and the second African American.
The chief usher and the residence staff are not political positions and it is very rare for someone to leave at the beginning of a new administration.
Stephen Rochon, who was the chief porter from 2007 to 2011, said the Trump transition team asked him to return “to take care of the house”, but he declined due to family reasons.
“It doesn’t really matter who the president is or which party is in office,” said Rochon. “The average of permanent employees is 25 years – an employee has been there for 50 years.”
