After tonight, we’ll call Timothée Chalamet for your From others name: Edgar Scissorhands. The 25-year-old actor – who wasn’t even born when Tim Burton’s fantasy film opened in theaters in December 1990 – joined the Edward Scissor Hands star Winona Ryder for a Cadillac-themed “streak” that debuted during the Super Bowl. (See the ad above.)
Did the original film feature Johnny Depp in the title role of a talented – or cursed – young man? – with scissors instead of the hands of his creator (Vincent Price), and fell in love with Ryder’s Kim Boggs during his brief stay in the suburbs. Let’s move on to the present, and Edgar is carrying the name Scissorhands with all the emo boredom and gothic fashion that this entails.
And these fashions were a big part of the project’s appeal to Chalamet, who said Vogue who worked closely with costume designer Melissa DesRosiers to create Edgar’s look. “[We wanted] to create a character that could appear authentic to the austere expressionism of the original, but with modern motives ”, explained Dune Star. “We also used the iconic crescent moon of Johnny’s original costume with a belt buckle as a kind of shoulder strap in Edgar’s costume, as a little call back to the past.”
Edgar may not have the experience of a father-son moment with Edward in the ad, but Chalamet credits his on-screen mom, Ryder, for bringing the spirit of the 90s into this 21st century shot. “It was a reminder of the role of ‘Darling of America ‘that Winona held in many American hearts and minds in the 90s. And she had some information that was honestly creative and very useful, even though it was between her and me. ”(Speaking of boyfriends, here’s a funny fact: Chalamet previously dated Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp.)
Twitter’s non-scissorhands were busy typing praise for Chalamet’s sharp turn as a 90s icon. If all of that Dune the franchise doesn’t work, maybe he can revisit the Scissorhands extended universe for a full-length feature film.
