Tiger Woods praises Stanford after the women’s basketball title: “What a victory”

Tiger Woods led the congratulatory messages to the Stanford women’s basketball team on Sunday night after the cardinal broke a 29-year championship drought against Arizona.

Stanford defeated Arizona, 54-53, to win his first women’s basketball championship since 1992. It was the team’s third title and the third under coach Tara VanDerveer.

Woods, a former Stanford student, tweeted his congratulatory message as he recovered from injuries sustained in a terrible car accident in February.

“Congratulations to the entire @StanfordWBB team and to coach VanDerveer. What a victory. House of Champions! Go Card!” He wrote.

Woods attended Stanford in 1994, after the cardinal won the NCAA championship. He would defend his amateur title in the United States in 1995 and be named Pac-10 Player of the Year, selected as an All-American from the First NCAA Team. In 1996, he was the first golfer to win three consecutive US Amateur titles and won the NCAA individual golf championship.

Woods is recovering from leg injuries sustained in an accident while driving his SUV in California.

The Los Angeles County sheriff said the cause of the accident had been determined, but the report would not be released, citing privacy concerns.

“A cause has been determined, the investigation concluded,” Los Angeles sheriff Alex Villanueva said last week. He added that investigators need Woods’ permission to disclose the information.

“We got in touch with Tiger Woods and his people,” continued Villanueva. “There are some privacy issues in releasing information about the investigation, so we will ask them if they waive privacy and then we will be able to make a full disclosure of all information about the accident.”

Woods does not face criminal charges.
