Golf legend Tiger Woods was seriously injured on Tuesday in a car accident in Southern California, officials said.
Woods’s vehicle was headed north on Hawthorne Boulevard on Blackhorse Road, on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, when it crashed and sustained “major damage,” the Los Angeles County Police Department said in a statement.
Woods was the driver and the vehicle’s sole occupant, the statement said.
“Mr. Woods was pulled out of the wreckage with the ‘jaws of life’,” added the sheriff.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of open fractures in at least one leg, law sources said.
Woods was in a car accident a few days after Thanksgiving 2009 in Florida. The accident inadvertently revealed a close marital dispute between him and then wife Elin Nordegren.
Woods hasn’t played a tournament this year and is recovering from a back surgery he did in December.
The 45-year-old golfer, who lives in Jupiter, Florida, was in southern California this weekend for the Genesis Invitational, which benefits his foundation.
