Tiger Woods expresses his appreciation when golfers wear exclusive Sunday outfits to honor after a car accident

This week was among the strangest golf weeks in years. Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident that threatened his career on Tuesday and underwent several procedures in the days that followed, while athletes from around the world wished for good luck.

On Sunday, at the Cologuard Classic, a PGA Tour Champions event, Phil Mickelson paid tribute to his longtime rival and recent friend, turning all red and black with his script – a nod to Tiger’s Sunday topics. Many players playing the WGC-Workday Championship on the PGA Tour also paid tribute to the guy who changed his sport.

Rory McIlroy, Cameron Champ, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Justin Thomas and several other golfers who played at the first WGC event in 2021 at The Concession wore some kind of red top and black pants to show Tiger that they were thinking of him.

Finau even showed “Tiger at the PGA Championship 2018” with the cap turned back.

One of the fascinating parts of Tiger’s career is this turning point in the final stage, with him playing the role of mentor and friend to many of the best players in the world who are in their 20s or 30s. Thomas was on the verge of tears on Tuesday when asked about the Woods accident, and everyone during the week was poignant in his effusive praise for the best he has ever done.

“It means a lot to the game of golf,” said Finau earlier in the week. “I can only speak from experience, it means a lot to my career. I already said, I think that time after time, the 1997 Masters changed the course of my life, the course of my career. Without that event, I probably wouldn’t do it if he weren’t here, he wouldn’t be playing golf. So he definitely changed the course of my life, my career.

“I think I’m one of hundreds of guys who would probably say the same thing. He means a lot to the game, but individually, I think he means a lot to us just individually, especially for me.”

At the end of Sunday, with plenty of tributes circulating, Woods took the time to express his gratitude on Twitter.

“It is difficult to explain how exciting it was today when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts,” Woods said. “For every golfer and every fan, you are really helping me to overcome this difficult time.”
