Tiger Woods does not remember being in a car accident in California: sheriff

Tiger Woods has no memory of the accident that left him with a broken right leg – and appeared to be unaware of how badly he was injured when the first police officer arrived on the scene, according to reports.

“At the hospital, he was asked about it by investigators and he didn’t remember the accident itself,” Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva told CNN, according to the London Times.

Sheriff Carlos Gonzalez, who arrived at the scene first, told NBC “Today” on Wednesday that the golf legend was calm but seemed unaware of how badly he was hurt.

“I don’t think he was aware of how badly he was hurt at the time. It could be a mixture of adrenaline, it could have been a shock, ”said Gonzalez.

“It was very fast again, the moment I arrived from the moment he rolled, so I don’t know if he had time to fully assess his injuries,” added Gonzalez, who arrived six minutes after a 911 call.

The deputy said he saw no signs of compromise at the site.

“On the spot, we look for evidence of intoxication, as if there was an odor from an alcoholic beverage or if there was an open container or a prescription drug,” he said.

“At this point we have seen no evidence of compromise and nothing more in terms of medical toxicology, I would not be aware at this point,” added Gonzalez.

He said the 45-year-old golf icon remained calm while asking assessment questions before determining that he needed to call the fire department to help set him free.

“I’ve seen collisions that didn’t seem so serious where the occupants were injured much more seriously,” he said. “I think this is just proof of the fact that he was wearing a seat belt, the airbags worked as intended and modern vehicles are much safer than they used to be.”

Gonzalez was using his body camera while interacting with Woods and the footage is expected to be available in the near future, according to USA Today.

Woods faces a long road to recovery, which includes extensive physical therapy and additional operations on his broken leg, medical experts told the Post.

Villanueva reiterated on Wednesday that there was no evidence of criminal irregularities, as he announced that no charges are being considered in the accident.

Asked about the possibility of a charge for reckless driving, Villanueva said there was no evidence that the Woods accident met the criteria.

“A charge of reckless driving has many elements in it,” he said. “This is purely an accident.
