Three megavaccination sites to open in New York City on Sunday

NEW YORK (WABC) – Three megavaccination centers will open in New York City on Sunday. These sites are capable of vaccinating 2,000 people a day, when vaccines are made available to the general public.

On Sunday morning, health professionals can get vaccinated by appointment on the city’s website.

These new facilities add to the more than 225 locations already open across the city.

On Monday, the vaccine will be made available to Group 1b – seniors over 75, teachers and traffic workers.

So far, about 150,000 people in the eligible group 1a of nursing homes and healthcare professionals in New York City have been vaccinated.

After a war of words with the mayor of Blasio, Governor Cuomo announced on Friday that he would expand the list of eligible people to 1b to include seniors over 75 – but there is not enough to vaccinate them all immediately.

“It will take 14 weeks. It will take 14 weeks to make 1a and 1b. Just because reservations have been made available, don’t expect everyone to receive a reservation immediately. For the supply fee, it will take 14 weeks,” said Governor Cuomo.

Howard Braunstein, 77, from Queens, is part of group 1b and is ready to be vaccinated. He has been stuck at home for 10 months, with limited trips to the supermarket, and is ready to come back to life and see his family again.

From group 1b who becomes eligible on Monday, there will be no priority – they will be the first to arrive, first to serve. It may be April before everyone in both groups who wants a vaccine gets it.

In addition, a vaccination center is located in a high school, so as long as people are getting the vaccines, there are no plans to reopen.

In addition, the Javits Center will open as a vaccine distribution site on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police commissioner Dermot Shea tested positive for COVID-19, along with 463 NYPD members who tested positive for coronavirus this month.

Qualifiers can apply for a vaccine on the city’s website. Starting on Monday, a telephone reservation system will also be in place.
