Three dead and three wounded in Illinois bowling alley shooting

Three people died and three were injured when a person opened fire at a bowling alley in Rockford, Illinois, on Saturday night, police said.

A suspect was in custody, police tweeted. Among the injured were teenagers, said Rockford Police Chief Daniel G. O’Shea, adding that no further details were available.

The reason was unknown, but O’Shea said, “We believe it is random.”

The chief emphasized that investigators are still trying to determine what happened in Don Carter Lanes. The shooting took place inside and outside the building, police said.

It was not clear why people were at the site, which was to be closed under pandemic restrictions. State rules say, “The bowling alleys must be closed.”

Don Carter Lanes includes a restaurant called Shooter’s Bar & Grill. Illinois restrictions say bars and restaurants can be served outdoors from 6 am to 11 pm.

The police called the incident “active sniper investigation,” and O’Shea said the situation was under control at the end of the night.

“We believe that now we have everything contained,” he said.

The three survivors were being treated for their injuries, although their conditions were not available, he said.

On Facebook, Don Carter Lanes said, “Please pray.”
