SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Health says an error in its online registration system for COVID-19 vaccines has allowed thousands of ineligible Utahns to schedule appointments recently.

The department said in an announcement on Saturday that 7,200 people signed up who are not in the currently eligible demographics.

These appointments will be canceled within the next 24 hours, UDOH said, and those whose appointments have been canceled will be notified by email. Several hundred have already canceled on their own after learning of the error.

“We apologize for this mistake and for any confusion it has caused,” wrote department spokesman Tom Hudachko. “We appreciate the enthusiasm that Utah residents have shown for the COVID-19 vaccine and encourage all Utahns to get vaccinated as soon as they become eligible.”

Anyone who believes that their appointment was canceled in error is advised to contact the local health department where they scheduled the appointment or try to make an appointment again online.
