Those are strawberries (not hearts) in Arthur’s boxers in Ghosts’ N Goblins

Ghosts’ n Goblins Creator Tokuro Fujiwara recently shared a mind-blowing fact about Capcom’s devilishly difficult platform game development: Arthur’s iconic heart-patterned boxers are actually covered in strawberries. Okay, maybe it’s just mind-blowing for me.

“There is a very important detail that I need to share with you that people may not know: the pattern of your underwear is actually strawberries,” said Fujiwara Polygon. “Arthur has an air of sturdiness when he is wearing his armor, but inside he looks a little chic and wears his favorite boxer.”

Since Ghosts’ n Goblins made his arcade debut in 1985, players widely accepted that Arthur’s underwear throughout the series was patterned with hearts. But very similar the White Mage’s robes in Final Fantasy III, the hardware limitations probably contributed to this discrepancy between what the developers intended and what the players interpreted on the screen.

Looking back, the little red spots in Arthur’s boxers could be anything, and it is only in conceptual art that the strawberry pattern becomes obvious. It certainly didn’t help that Capcom wore boxers at heart in 2001 Maximum: Ghosts to Glory, a spiritual successor to the classic Ghosts’ n Goblins series, and its 2003 sequel Maximo vs. Zin Army. Hearts even made an appearance in one Dead Rising Easter eggs.

Interestingly, the truth has been around for some time. Arthur’s biography in both Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 of 2011 mention “boxer shorts with strawberry print”. They can even be seen during the game after their gold super armor runs out, but these games are probably a little too chaotic to pay attention to something so small.

“However, his underwear is not simply something he likes to wear,” Fujiwara explained during his Polygon interview. “In fact, it was a gift from the princess and acts as an ‘amulet’ to protect Arthur in battle. It is probably safe to say that the strawberry design was something the princess liked. “

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, there’s no doubt that Arthur’s boxers are stamped with strawberries Resurrection of Ghosts’ and Goblins, a storybook-style remaster of the original 1985 Switch release on February 25. I don’t know about you, but for so long I think of them as hearts that I’m not sure what to do with the truth. If you need to talk, I’m here.
