Valheim, a Viking survival game made by a team of just five, sold two million copies in less than two weeks. That is … load the five … divide by nine … one million copies a week!

It was only Friday that Nathan wrote a post celebrating the Nordic nerve wrecker, an article so good that I installed the game before I finished reading. I happened to be joining a rather large crowd.

It is fair to say that things are going very well for the rookie indie team Iron Gate. Launching the game on Steam early access a few Tuesdays ago, it sold over two million copies, the developers revealed in a post today.

Your joy is quite joyful to see. “Everyone at Iron Gate has really appreciated all the messages, love, questions and thoughts from all of you, so please keep coming!” they say. “And, once again, a big thank you to all of you for helping us reach this ridiculous milestone in less than two weeks of browsing Early Access.”

“Forget the dinghies,” adds Iron Gate, deciding to tell us a little bit of the story. “[We] they have now reached a record of over 700 years by boasting the largest Viking population in all of human history. For reference, the previous peak in Viking numbers was defined in 1300 AD and was approximately 500,000. “

In fact, they came close to a live meeting, with 360,000 simultaneous players over the weekend. And that’s less than fifteen days in a one-year planned early access development. My “back-of-a-Google” math estimates about $ 28 million going to them and Coffee Stain Publishing, after you take Valve’s heavy tithing. Which is quite transformative money.

I find it very exciting that this can still happen on Steam. It seemed for a moment that the days of a Stanley’s parableovernight indie success is over, until the most recent sudden success of names like Among us and Fall Guys. Kudos, Iron Gate. Just don’t go crazy, but definitely buy a castle.
