Thomas Tuchel will be on the bench for Chelsea vs Wolves; first training session planned for Tuesday night

But it will not be officially revealed to the media until the end of this week, after Chelsea spent Tuesday finalizing the terms of their deal.

The Chelsea hierarchy identified Tuchel as Roman Abramovich’s 11th permanent administrative appointment some time before Frank Lampard’s resignation on Monday morning.

They wanted to ensure that the former Paris Saint-Germain coach would be in place in time for Wolves’ visit before making Lampard’s departure official.

This was postponed as a result of Brexit and Covid-19 regulations, but after arriving in London, Tuchel was released to join the Chelsea bubble in Cobham, which means he will be able to sit on the bench and start a new era at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Although the 47-year-old man has to adhere to the UK’s quarantine rules, he received an FA exemption to take control of Chelsea immediately after the test was negative for coronavirus.

Tuchel had no doubts about his expectations for his new role.

Lampard was fired after failing to fulfill his preseason mission to narrow the gap at the top of the table.

The club made it clear to the legendary former midfielder last summer that a result in the top four was not an acceptable minimum requirement.

There were concerns about his lack of experience – and lack of a plan for the future.

The form and confidence of a squad that the club hierarchy believes it can challenge at the top of the table was also an important factor.

Tuchel is expected to change the fortunes of dear summer recruits and compatriots, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. But it is clear that the issues within the game team went beyond this pair.

He has a responsibility to rescue a season in which the club is still in the Champions League and the FA Cup – and just 11 points from Manchester United, who are at the top of the table.
