Johnny Depp posted a holiday message for fans reflecting on a year that “has been so difficult for so many”.
“This year has been very difficult for many,” wrote the 57-year-old actor. “A better time ahead. Happy holidays to all! My love and respect to you all. Forever, JD. ”The message was accompanied by a photo of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan (famous for the Christmas classic“ Fairytale of New York ”) taken on the set of Gold pot, a documentary about the hard-life rocker Depp produced.
Asia Argento, Stray Cats Slim drummer Jim Phantom and singer Patti Smith were among those who responded to the Pirates of the Caribbean the star post, which comes after the loss of your defamation suit in a UK court and your subsequent departure from the Fantastic animals franchise.
“We are yours forever,” wrote Smith.
In addition to a post last month promoting the launch of Gold pot, Depp’s last statement on social media was his open letter on November 6 announcing to fans that Warner Bros. had asked him to resign from Grindelwald’s post in the Harry Potter spin-off series – in which Mads Mikkelsen has just been cast as his replacement – following what he called the “surreal trial” of the UK court.
The actor had sued the News Group Newspapers (NGN), owner of the British tabloid the sun, and the tabloid’s executive editor, Dan Wootton, about a 2018 article that referred to “overwhelming evidence” that he attacked ex-wife Amber Heard during their relationship. Depp denied the actress’s allegations of domestic violence, but the judge at his trial ruled against him, saying it was not defamatory for the newspaper to describe him as a “women beater”.
Last week, Depp’s lawyer filed new documents in the appellate court asking for a retrial, rebutting the “uncritical acceptance” of Heard’s deposition by the original judge and insisting that his famous client “did not receive a fair trial”.
“This was a very public trial, reached by a single judge, making devastating discoveries of extremely serious crimes committed, and where it had broader implications for the general public, particularly victims or unjustly accused of alleged domestic abuse,” wrote Depp’s lawyer, David Sherborne.
