Golden State took on the unenviable title after the figures provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were updated on December 26. California now tops the national list of new daily cases per capita, seeing its average seven-day jump from the fourth largest to the largest overall.
Now, hospitals across California are suffering from the unprecedented rush of new cases, with too much care rationing or planning to screen patients as soon as they arrive. “This team will make the necessary decisions about allocating limited medical resources based on the best medical information possible and will use the same decision criteria that are being used nationally and throughout California in all patient cases,” said the Huntington Hospital in Southern California in a statement released, according to ABC News.
In an attempt to stem the tide of new infections, California officials announced that requests to stay home that were about to expire would likely be extended in most counties for at least three weeks. The restrictions, which are among the strictest in the United States, prohibit people from leaving the home or traveling, except to buy groceries, seek medical attention, practice individual exercises outdoors or walk pets, reports Reuters.
