“Saturday Night Live” is no stranger to relatable skits – from mothers deprived of Christmas presents in their 30s who wish to buy their own home and, more recently, mothers who have been drinking too much wine to deal with coronavirus stress .
The sketch takes place during a birthday party for the character of Aidy Bryant, a member of the “SNL” cast, and also features Heidi Gardner, Cecily Strong, Chloe Fineman and the episode’s host, Regina King. It starts with the five women in the living room, and Bryant’s friends start delivering their gifts. It starts with a gift from Strong, containing a kitschy wooden plaque that reads: “Dinner Options 1. Take 2. Leave.”
The pattern continues with Gardner giving his friend two more painted wooden signs that say, “Wine gets better with age, I get better with wine” and “You can be drunk, how can I say I am?”
But things change when Bryant opens King’s gifts, revealing two more signs with the slogans: “I like you better when I’m exhausted” and “Hey, Bartender, I want to die tonight.”
Bryant finally declares that he has not opened the gifts of the day, but Gardner insists on delivering another gift, which says: “I put bottles of wine in other people’s recycling cans so that the garbage collectors don’t know how much I spend in a week.”
While her friends “awww” in unison, Bryant fits.
“This is all about drinking. Are you trying to tell me something? We all drink during confinement. We are just mothers having fun, aren’t we?”
After his outburst, the signals didn’t get much better, prompting Bryant to end the party entirely. Her friends apologize for being excited, so Bryant agrees to open his last gift, which, of course, followed the pattern of the others.
Fans of the show were thrilled with the accuracy of the sketch, with a viewer writing, “Many of these (signs) are hitting very close to home 😬.”
Another user joked, “where did snl get my mom’s footage from?”
“When are they going to Hallmark? Asking for a friend,” commented a third.
