On Wednesday, for example, the United States saw the worst total of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day (3,865), according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. These data also show that more than 21.2 million people in the United States have already been infected with the virus, while a record 132,476 people are currently hospitalized because of the virus, according to the Covid Tracking Project. This helps to underline why the pace of implantation of the COVID vaccine needs to be accelerated significantly, with Bloomberg’s vaccine tracker showing that only 5.48 million doses have been administered in the U.S. so far, until Thursday. In the CDC’s newest Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report, the agency provided the most up-to-date look at the number of people who experienced the severe but rare allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis (which can be fatal) after receiving the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine. -BioNTech.
From December 14 to 23, the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Notification System found 21 cases of anaphylaxis after people received the Pfizer vaccine, with 71% of these episodes occurring 15 minutes after vaccination. This translates to 11.1 cases per 1 million doses of the vaccine – making the likelihood of this happening extremely rare, to say the least. In comparison, however, the rate of severe allergic reaction after people received the flu vaccine is only 1.3 episodes per 1 million doses.
At a news conference, the director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, said: “The rate of anaphylaxis for COVID-19 vaccines may seem high compared to flu vaccines. But I want to assure you that this is still a rare result. “
The new CDC data comes to share that, of the people who experienced a severe allergic reaction after vaccination, 17 had a history of allergies to everything from certain foods to drugs. For this reason, the CDC says that people with general allergies should not be afraid to receive the vaccine – with the exception that anyone who has a known allergic reaction to specific ingredients of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines (such as polysorbate) should not take the vaccine.
“It is possible,” speculates the new CDC report, “that the intense media attention around the national vaccination program COVID-19 … (has) affected the behaviors and practices of vaccine recipients and health professionals, including high concern and anxiety, a higher index of suspicion for anaphylaxis and a lower limit for early treatment of suspected cases, resulting in an increase in the diagnosis of suspected anaphylaxis. “
