ATHENS – The defensive backs of Georgia freshmen will impact Bulldogs’ hopes for the championship this season, Kirby Smart said during an interview on signing day on Wednesday.
“I think they will have an impact early, whether they can or not,” Smart said in a Rivals.com video chat with Mike Farrell.
“I cannot say whether they can or cannot, because they are not really in our system. Obviously, they are talented athletes, or they would not be coming to the University of Georgia and the SEC. “
Georgia lost four of its five participants in the 2019 high school season. The Safety Lewis Cine was the only regular return, but Christopher Smith started the second half of the season after Richard LeCounte’s accident, which ended the Halloween Night season.
Latavious Brini also saw safety action in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, showing that there is some depth to the position.
But the Bulldogs lost cornerbacks Eric Stokes, Tyson Cambell and DJ Daniel of 2019, and Tyrique Stevenson was moved to Miami after Smart gave him a cornerback start at the Peach Bowl.
“Singing is our greatest need than safety,” said Smart, “and we are going to have to find out what these guys can play, because we are really in need of corners at the start of the season.”
Georgia hired cornerbacks Nyland Green and Kamari Lassiter in December, and brings back junior cornerback Ameer Speed along with freshmen Kelee Ringo, Jalen Kimber and Daran Branch.
Smart indicated in a Fox5 television interview on Wednesday that he is counting on Ringo, who had lip surgery last summer and failed last season be mentally prepared.
“Our system is one in which you need some experience to learn and develop, and luckily for Kelee he is really a brilliant kid, you know he didn’t miss a meeting last year. He knew he wasn’t going to play, he had surgery, but he was in every front row meeting, on the edge of the seat, answering questions that I was told at the time that this guy is made of the right material. “
Georgia is scheduled to open spring training on March 16, working for the April 17 G-Day Game.
