They did everything right. But after a haircut at home, husband and wife died from Covid-19

But a simple visit to the family to cut their hair cost them both their lives.

The Brunos were married almost six decades before they died of the virus, their son Joseph Bruno told CNN. The Chicago couple, who died 10 days apart, are now among the more than 337,000 people who died of coronavirus in the United States.

Bruno hopes his family’s pain will serve as an important reminder of how easy it can be to hire Covid-19, no matter how safe you are.

Precautions fall

Advice: Why you should quarantine after traveling for Christmas.

In late November, Bruno’s mother, Carol Bruno, went to his apartment with his sister so she could cut his hair. Before the visit, her sister, who works at a beauty salon, did a Covid-19 test that was negative. She was also quarantined for three to four days – a sign that the family understood that it was safe to be near her.

His mother, on the other hand, had not gone out much during the pandemic.

During the visit, which lasted about 40 minutes, the Brunos wore masks and avoided hugging, explained Bruno. They also made sure that their mother sat near the windows they had opened as an extra precaution.

The day after the visit, Bruno’s sister started showing symptoms of Covid-19. Mother and son started to feel bad soon after.

A visit turns into tragedy

Carol Bruno, the mother, was admitted to the hospital on Thanksgiving Day, but was discharged that week because her condition improved. Two days later, she returned to the hospital where she was placed on a respirator.

Then, her husband fell ill.

Mike Bruno didn’t even accompany his wife and daughter to see his son, but he started to feel the symptoms and was admitted to a hospital about two weeks after Thanksgiving, according to Bruno.

The day after her husband was put on a respirator, Carol passed away. Nine days later, two days before Christmas, Mike followed him.

“I think what gives us peace is knowing that my father did not know that my mother had passed away,” said Bruno to CNN affiliate ABC7.

After months of caution, a simple choice was enough, one they considered safe.

“If I had made that sacrifice and, you know, I wouldn’t have spent, you know, 30-40 minutes with my mom – they would still be here,” said Bruno.
