The rate of new daily cases of COVID in the U.S. continues to drop slightly over time. In the past two weeks, the national daily average has reached a high rate that most authorities find worrying. Now, as experts become increasingly concerned with what the next few weeks may contain, The Washington Post shows that certain states are seeing COVID cases increase again. According The Washington Post, the national seven-day average of new daily cases of COVID dropped to 57,485 on March 8, representing a nearly 15% drop from the previous seven-day average. And while last week saw more than a dozen states with double-digit percentage point increases in cases, seven saw their numbers rise this week.
Experts began to warn that while the pace of vaccinations has increased considerably, the increase in contagious variants of COVID has raised concerns that another big increase in cases may be imminent. During an appearance at NBC’s Meet the press on March 7, Michael Osterholm, MD, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, warned that the potential remains for another increase in COVID that could likely occur in the next six to 14 weeks.
“The last time I was on your show four weeks ago, the [U.K. strain] B.1.1.7. the variants made up about 1 to 4 percent of the viruses we saw in communities across the country, “said Osterholm to the host Chuck Todd. “Today, it’s 30-40 percent. And what we saw in Europe, when we hit the 50 percent mark, you see an increase in cases.”
During an event with the National League of Cities on March 8, Rochelle Walensky, MD, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), echoed these concerns. “There is so much that is critical in the next two months,” she warned. “How quickly we vaccinate and whether we have another wave really depends on what happens in March and April.”
