It is not every day that breaking a pandemic record is good news, but on April 3, the United States reported that it had administered more than four million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in a 24-hour period, reports CNN. But even with that raising the seven-day average to more than 3 million injections administered daily, the authorities continued to warn that conditions were still worrying in some areas, as cases continued to rise. And according to data from The Washington Post, this includes the 10 states that saw significant spikes in COVID cases in the last week of 15 percent or more. The national daily average of new cases per 100,000 people has dropped to 2% from the 12% reported seven days ago, show data from The Post, on April 6. However, 26 states reported an overall increase in the same period, with 10 showing a significant jump of 15% or more in the past week.
During an appearance at NBC’s Meet the press on April 4th, Michael Osterholm, MD, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, warned that despite the optimistic outlook of many, the situation at the site was starting to look like “a category five hurricane compared to the rest of the world.”
He also warned that a new obstacle has arisen in the fight against COVID-19: children becoming infected. “This variant B.1.1.7 is a brand new ball game,” said Osterholm of the highly contagious strain that was discovered in the UK in December and has now been reported in all 50 states.
“Unlike previous strains of the virus, we did not see children below the eighth grade being infected frequently, or they were not often very sick. They didn’t broadcast to the rest of the community, ”he explained. “B.1.1.7 turns it upside down. These kids are now really big challenges in terms of how they transmit.”
