There are now more people vaccinated than confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sonoma County

Sonoma County has reached a promising milestone in the pandemic: the number of Sonoma County residents who have completed their vaccines now exceeds the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

About 32,777 people received both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines in Sonoma County on February 25, according to county data. There have been 27,925 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the county since March 2020, when a resident who returned from a cruise to Mexico became the first local person to test positive for the virus.

“It is a significant milestone that we now have more people fully vaccinated than the total number of confirmed cases,” said Matt Brown, communications specialist in Sonoma County, by email. “This means that we are actively putting the vaccine in the arms and protecting vulnerable people from the virus. As more people get vaccinated, we expect to start seeing less transmission of COVID, which will help to reduce our case rate. “

There were 67,227 residents who received the first dose of the vaccine and 100,004 people received the vaccine by February 25, according to the data.

“This is almost 25% of our adult population aged 16 and over (411,000),” wrote Brown. “We will continue to vaccinate as many people as possible, as long as there is supply.”

About 494,336 people live in Sonoma County, according to US Census Bureau estimates. To achieve collective immunity, 60-80% of the population needs to be vaccinated, said county public health officer, Dr. Sundari Mase, at a news conference on February 18.
