The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera viewfinder is the latest example of a disguised feature specification

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra Leak Rear DisplaySource: XDA-Developers / Tech Buff

Xiaomi is working on a premium version of its new Mi 11, and if an initial leak from the YouTuber Tech Buff PH is authentic (and it looks like it is), the Mi 11 Ultra is fully camera-focused.

There is nothing to be surprised. All the best Android phones receive a major update in the camera department compared to the previous year’s model, and the camera features are one of those things that you can see in any type of launch presentation. It can often seem like the phone is secondary and companies are trying to sell us cameras that can connect to the Internet.

But nobody in their right mind has ever asked for what we see in the camera department of the practical Mi 11 Ultra: the giant camera collision with three high megapixel cameras, a trio of what appears to be camera flashes and a 1-inch AMOLED screen that mirrors the front screen (or opens your own app, if you’re interested).

Why? I understand the triple lens part. One is said to be periscopic with up to 120x zoom and the other is probably wide-angle or macro or something, while the third is supposed to be a good regular camera that is used when you don’t want to spy on windows.

But that rear display is just silly. I can think of many bad things to say about it, but I will limit myself to the first two that occurred to me instantly when I saw it: the screen will increase the cost of the device much, and the best part of the Mi 11 is its price below $ 1000. And at arm’s length – like when you’re taking a selfie – you won’t be able to see anything on that postage stamp-sized screen, reducing its usefulness.

When the Mi 11 Ultra is announced, Xiaomi has a chance to tell us why we need it.

I can’t think of any reason for it to be anything other than using it to frame a selfie taken with the rear camera lens instead of the really good 20MP selfie camera that comes with the original Mi 11. Maybe you could take a 120x zoom photo of your fillings to send to the dentist or something, but I’m thinking that the front camera and a screen you can see will take better selfies than any of the rear lenses through a tiny display.

I’m sure Xiaomi will tell us all the use cases for this thing as soon as the company makes the phone official. But I bet most people will be scratching their heads wondering how much that display added to the cost of the phone.

It’s a shame, really, because the rest of the phone’s specs look great. 67 W charging, 4K HDR recording, video night mode and 5,000 mAh battery. It even has a QHD + 120Hz screen. It is a pity that everything has to be connected to some kind of parasitic protuberance on the back with a useless mirror of the real screen that you will end up using.
