LONDON, February 2 (Reuters) – The E484K mutation of the new coronavirus occurred spontaneously in the UK virus variant, an outbreak medicine professor on a panel advising the British government said on Tuesday.

“The most worrying mutation, which we call E484K, also occurred spontaneously in the new Kent strain in some parts of the country,” Calum Semple told BBC radio. The UK variant was first detected in the county of Kent, in southern England. (Written by Estelle Shirbon; edited by Guy Faulconbridge)
