The world of golf gathers around Michelle Wie West after Rudy Giuliani’s ‘highly inappropriate’ comments on the Steve Bannon podcast

The former New York mayor appeared last Thursday in ‘War Room’ Podcast presented by former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, and was remembering a round of golf he played with Wie West and the late talk show host Rush Limbaugh at a charity event in 2014.

As he remembers, Limbaugh was complaining about the “paparazzi” and blamed Giuliani, only for the former New York mayor to point out that the photographers were from then Wie – she married Jonnie West, director of basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors in 2019.

“On the lawn is Michelle Wie and she is preparing for the putt,” said Giuliani on the podcast on Thursday. “Now Michelle Wie is beautiful. She is six feet tall. And she has a strange posture. She bends over completely. And her underwear appears. And the press was going crazy.”

Giuliani ended his story by asking, “Can I tell you this joke, I’m not sure?” To which Bannon replied, “We have already told you, so I don’t know.”

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Guliani and Rush Limbaugh watch Michelle Wie play during Els for Autism Pro-am at The PGA National Golf Club on March 10, 2014 in Palm Beach, Florida.

Wie West called Giuliani’s story “highly inadequate” and “disturbing”.

“What that person should have remembered about that day was the fact that I got 64 and beat all the male golf players on the field leading our team to victory. I shudder thinking that he was smiling at me and praising me for my game while aiming at me and referring to my ‘panties’ on my back all day, “said Wie West in a Twitter post.

“What should be discussed is the level of elite skill that women play, not what we wear or look like.

“My swing stance six years ago was designed to improve my swing stats (I ended up winning that year’s US Open), NOT as an invitation to look up my skirt!

“Nike makes skirts with shorts embedded underneath for exactly that reason … so that women can feel CONFIDENT and COMFORTABLE playing a game we love.”

Michelle Wie, from the United States, plays her second stroke at par 4, first hole, during the second round of the 2019 KPMG Women's PGA championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club on June 21, 2019 in Chaska, Minnesota.
The United States Golfing Association retweeted Wie-West’s tweet with the comment: “Sexism has no place in golf or in life. We are always by your side @MichelleWieWest.”
The Ladies Professional Golf Association also posted on social media in support of Wie West.

“She is an LPGA Tour winner 5 times. Great champion. LPGA board member, elected by her peers. Stanford graduate. Working mother. We support @MichelleWieWest.”

Giuliani did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.
