Microsoft is taking one of the less-used parts of Windows 10 behind the lumber yard in Redmond, so get ready to say goodbye to the 3D Objects folder.
You may not even know it is there, to be honest, as it is one of those strange pieces of digital junk that Windows 10 has accumulated over the years. But as Microsoft gets closer to its major Sun Valley update – which is supposed to rejuvenate the appearance of Windows 10 – it is starting its spring cleanup earlier.
Microsoft itself announced the news in a blog post published on Wednesday, February 24, entitled “Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21322.” TechRadar previously reported on this announcement.
Listed in Changes and improvements, the post notes “The 3D Objects folder will no longer be displayed as a special folder in the File Explorer after upgrading to this build.”
Sayonara and good trip, we say. For those who don’t remember, there was a time (around 2016) when Microsoft was all about 3D objects. That’s why you have Paint 3D and 3D effects in your applications.
Microsoft’s obsession with all three-dimensional things has also revealed Microsoft HoloLens, the mixed reality glasses that have since become more of an accessory in the business world than anything else.
Today, this 3D object folder is just taking up space that will be better used (hopefully) in the aforementioned Sun Valley update, scheduled for fall 2021.
Of course, Microsoft actually hates to eliminate any feature completely and is giving users a way to find the 3D Objects folder if they need it. You can find it by typing “% userprofile%” in File Explorer or selecting “Show all folders” in the navigation pane.
