The ‘wellness’ section of the Google Assistant gets ready to monitor fitness

In a silent update for Google Assistant, a new “wellness” section was added, which prepares the Assistant to show its health and fitness data on smart monitors and more.

Now distributed to users, the “Wellness” section of the Google Assistant settings replaces the “Sleep” section launched in November 2020. This new section integrates sleep settings, including integration with Fitbit. Currently, sleeping is the only option available in this section.

However, the “Wellness” section of the Google Assistant will do much more over time, as the page causes management of “sleep, exercise and nutrition” data collected from fitness devices.

Most importantly, this data will be shown “proactively” on compatible devices, these devices being Google Assistant smart displays. At the moment, we can see the current Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max and Lenovo Smart Clock as options to proactively display this data, although once enabled we didn’t see the results actually appearing on the screen.

Google explains:

Allow the Assistant to proactively display your information on your display devices from your connected health and fitness devices and services, such as exercise, nutrition, sleep or wellness data.

Presumably, this includes deeper integration with the Fitbit app and possibly Google Fit too, but none of these features have been released yet. This new section is probably also being prepared before the launch of Google’s new Nest Hub, which we have informed exclusively that it would be shipped with Soli for sleep tracking purposes.

Google also notes that with these features enabled, anyone who interacts with the smart display can see the information.
