The weather causes dangerous conditions, resulting in multiple road closures

EL PASO COUNTY, Colorado (KRDO) The Pikes Peak Regional Emergency Management Office said Sunday afternoon that it continues to monitor weather conditions closely and said that local officials are ready to respond to the resulting winter impacts in and around Colorado Springs.

Authorities said the National Weather Service issued a blizzard alert for northern El Paso County, Monument Ridge and Rampart Range until midnight on Sunday. The rest of El Paso County, including Colorado Springs, remains on a winter storm alert until midnight on Sunday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said it closed I-25 in both directions, from Interquest Parkway in northern Colorado Springs to Plum Creek Parkway at Castle Rock, and are more attentive drivers to “turn around if possible”. Parts of highways 24, 83, 94 and 105 are also closed in both directions.

Snow and strong winds of 20-30 miles per hour and gusts of 40 miles per hour or more have resulted in blizzard conditions in northern El Paso County.

Strong winds and snow are expected to continue into the early afternoon, causing gusts and snow currents and almost white conditions sometimes along slippery roads, and poor visibility has resulted in dangerous travel conditions throughout the day. Authorities are asking residents to continue to avoid travel, if possible.
