The Virginia Department of Health reports over 4,000 new COVID-19 cases

RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – The Virginia Department of Health is reporting a total of 327,993 cases of COVID-19 across the community on Friday, December 25, dating back to the beginning of the pandemic in March. That is 4,078 more than the 323,915 reported on Thursday, a smaller increase than Thursday’s 4,782 new cases.

4,070,000 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests were conducted the same number reported Thursday, with a positivity rate of 11.5 percent in the past week, also the same number reported Thursday.

As of Friday, there were 4,820 coronavirus-related deaths recorded in the community since the pandemic began. This is more than 4,791 reported Thursday.

2,478 people across Virginia are hospitalized on Friday with confirmed or pending COVID-19 testing cases, down from 2,577 reported on Thursday.

29,131 patients with COVID have been discharged from hospitals in Virginia since the pandemic began. This is according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, which receives daily reports from hospitals across the community.

These hospital numbers are different from those reported by the HRD, which only collects hospitalization status at the time each case is investigated by the HRD, and is an underrepresentation of hospitalizations in Virginia.

Any new cases confirmed by health departments across the state for the rest of the day will not appear until at least the next day on the state list, as official figures are updated only once a day, with a cut at 5pm every day. for new cases to be reflected in the next day’s list.
