The Twinkly intelligent light line offers fully addressable Lightstrip and Nanoleaf alternatives

The smart light market is hardly stagnant, but there are key players whose products dominate their niche. If you’re looking for smart lighting strips, you’ll probably end up with a Philips Hue product, and people who want decorative wall pieces tend to use the Nanoleaf lights popularized by Twitch and YouTube. But Twinkly (famous for being a smart Christmas light) has just released its own spatially mapped versions of both.

In case you’re not familiar, Twinkly is known (among other things) for its string lights. The company has a unique variation on this formula, as its lights can be mapped by an application, allowing you to apply patterns after the fact without worrying about how to configure or place them. It is very cool:

Today, Twinkly is announcing three new products: Twinkly Line smart LED strips, Twinkly Flex LED tube and Twinkly Squares smart LED panels, and they all benefit from this technology as well.

Twinkly Line

Twinkly Line is a set of smart LED strips that come in two options: a 100 RGB LED strip and an extension strip available in increments of 100 similar LEDs, all individually addressable for animations and effects through the Twinkly application.

The availability of the Twinkly line is set for the second quarter of 2021, but the price has not been revealed.

Twinkly Flex

Twinkly Flex is a “tubular” light that can be flexed and contorted to fit where you need it – or left out as a striking highlight. Each tube comes packed with 200 RGB LEDs that can be mapped to real-world spaces through the Twinkly app.

Twinkly Flex will be available in the second quarter of 2021, at a TBD price.

Twinkly squares

The new Twinkly Squares target directly (ha) at Nanoleaf. These are not fancy geometric shapes in their own right, just large square panels offering 64 RGB pixels in an 8×8 configuration, sold in packs of 9 or 16 panels. This is much more potential than just a single color per panel.

As with other Twinkly products, each of these pixels is individually mappable, so you can display complex and changeable patterns, courtesy of the Twinkly app – one step closer to my dream of an entire wall covered by Conway’s Game of Life.

Unlike the other two products in the line today, Twinkly Squares will not be available until the fourth quarter of 2021, so you have a wait ahead. In case you haven’t noticed the pattern yet, Twinkly hasn’t revealed the price for this one either.

All Twinkly products are compatible with Razer Chroma with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integration and (as repeatedly noted above), all work with the Twinkly app, which allows you to map the position of each LED and apply fun effects, giving them an advantage decent competition – although you still can’t buy these new lights.
