The Seattle Seahawks attack stumbled on the home stretch after a hot start in 2020.
Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf, speaking to former Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall at Podcast I’m an Athlete, said the defenses knew what Seattle was trying to do, making it easier to slow down.
“The teams started to discover us,” said Metcalf, via Michael-Shawn Dugar from The Athletic. “We’ve been making deep passes since (coach) Pete (Carroll) got there. Game-action. Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, go deep. The teams just say, ‘We’re not going to leave you all go deep. ‘”
Looking at Metcalf’s brief quote, there is clearly some frustration over an offense that has become predictable and cannot be adjusted.
Pete Carroll’s response to the offensive attack was to say that the Seahawks should run the ball harder in 2021 to force defenses out of Cover 2’s looks that slowed down the deep pass game, as Metcalf mentioned.
The inability to adjust the offensive led to the dismissal of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
The next man in charge of the Seahawks attack will be tasked with overcoming the obstacles that prevented Seattle from unlocking the true potential of talented players like Metcalf. Given Carroll’s comments, however, Metcalf’s complaints about running the ball at initial casualties are unlikely to be received with open ears.
