The strategic roguelike Loop Hero has already been launched

Loop Hero is a new world looping deck building RPG released today. It puts you in the shoes of a little adventurer, trapped in an infinite loop by an evil Lich. As you travel in infinite circles, you can collect items and change the world to try to escape. Over the past week or so, I have written about some new indie roguelikes (because I love them), but I think this is the most interesting of the group.

I’ve been watching Loop Hero for a while – like others at the RPS treehouse, it’s one of our most anticipated games for March – and it really is my way. On your crazy journeys, you will fight monsters and collect cards that allow you to change a section of the loop. This may involve placing a building, an enemy, or changing the terrain. A new terrain, for example, will allow you to find new monsters or things that can leave something useful for your expedition.

It looks like a kind of slow-burning roguelike, in which each execution gradually helps to increase its resources. It’s very strategic too: you could use a terrain change card to eliminate something dangerous in your path, although it could put you at risk for other crazy hazards. It’s all about planning your moves to turn the loop in your favor. It is also important to note that this game is a kind of autobattler. So, after making your moves, placing your cards and pressing go, your adventurer will begin to wander the path you have prepared.

Each time you die (or complete a race), the new loop you enter will be completely different. Among your expeditions, you can select character classes and select cards that you think will be beneficial. Finally, you will defeat some bosses and defeat the evil Lich that holds the world captive.

If you’re interested, you can get a good sense of how the game works on the Loop Hero website. The whole thing spins endlessly as you roll down, and shows you how combat works, too.

Loop Hero is now available on Steam for £ 13 / $ 15 / € 15. It is developed by Four Quarters and published by Devolver Digital.
