Sunday night went to the record books, as all four screen awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards went to people of color. During the hour-long pre-recorded program, Daniel Kaluuya, the late Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis and Yuh-Jung Youn swept the categories of cinematic acting, making it the first time since 1995, when the SAG Awards began, that people from color won all four awards.
Minari the victory of the Yuh-Jung Youn star for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor was particularly significant, as she became the first Asian woman to take home the award.
“I don’t know how to describe my feelings,” said Youn during his acceptance speech. “I was recognized by Westerners. It is very, very honored, especially by my fellow actors who chose me as a supporting actress ”.
Black Bottom by Ma Rainey had a great night, as Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman took home the awards for best lead actor. Davis thanked August Wilson, the playwright whose work the film is based on, for creating a story that “leaves a legacy for actors of color”.
Boseman died in 2020, but his widow Simone Ledward Boseman accepted the award on his behalf, saying: “If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader who pushes the seesaw of the mind strongly. This is a quote from Chadwick Boseman. “
Daniel Kaluuya won his second SAG award, this time for his support work in Judas and the Black Messiah. He honored his former Black Panther co-star during his acceptance speech as well, saying, “This is for Chadwick Boseman.”
The Screen Actors Guild Awards was broadcast live on TNT and TBS at 9pm.
