The southern United States has the coldest air in recent years

There are some great stories about the weather going on in the coming days, with the coldest air in recent years reaching the south and more ice and snow in many regions.

An ice storm continues Thursday along a stationary front draped across the Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio River valleys as ice builds up on roads, power lines and trees. Dangerous travel, power outages and damage to trees will be possible.

Ice storm warnings remain in effect from Arkansas to Kentucky. North of the frontal boundary, snow will be possible, while south of that line, rain and storms will be possible.

The Pacific Northwest is also very busy, with heavy rain and snow in the mountains.

It will be cold enough for measurable snow to the cities of Portland and Seattle, as well as freezing rain and / or hail. One more system will be moved this weekend.

The impressive arctic cold that will spread further south this weekend has temperatures of 20 to 40 degrees below average, with dangerous chills for the northern plains in the upper midwest.

Some areas may experience temperatures as low as -50 degrees, which can cause freeze burns in just a few minutes.
