The South Carolina attorney is resigning

CHARLESTON, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – Peter McCoy, the United States attorney for South Carolina, announced on Tuesday that he will resign starting at 11:59 pm on February 28.

It was not entirely unexpected, as U.S. lawyers appointed by Donald Trump under his presidency were asked to step down. It is standard practice during changes in the presidency and has led to the resignation in Georgia of US Southern District Attorney Bobby Christine.

“It was the greatest honor of my life to serve our great nation and our beloved state of South Carolina as the United States attorney,” McCoy wrote in a letter of resignation to President Joe Biden. “Working daily with the dedicated public servants of this office to impartially apply the rule of law, defend our Constitution and make our communities more secure is a privilege for which I will be forever grateful.”

McCoy began his service as a United States attorney on March 30, 2020, being initially appointed as an interim United States attorney and then receiving unanimous confirmation from the Senate. Before taking office as a lawyer in the United States, he served as chairman of the judicial committee in the South Carolina House of Representatives and as a private lawyer. Prior to his time in private practice, McCoy served for five years as a criminal prosecutor in the 9th Circuit Lawyer’s Office.

McCoy led the district of approximately 62 assistant attorneys in the United States, 75 support staff members and 18 hired support staff members in four divisions in four offices across the state.
