A fan team managed to reverse engineer the source code for both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City, making files available for download.
This is great news! We recently saw what reverse-engineered games can mean for modders, with Mario 64 being the biggest example, allowing it to be “ported” to the PC instead of being run by emulation.
Although that is not the main objective here – both GTA games are now available on the PC – the source code also allows modders to create potentially new and interesting things. How, using Mario 64 as an example again, adding lightning stroke to the game.
That said, gaining access to the source code makes portability to other easier platforms, and the team already has the code running on Switch, Vita and Wii U, while hoping to get it on PS2 and Xbox as well.
