The smartphone with built-in microscope lens

This is not an early April joke, dear reader. Oppo’s latest flagship device has an integrated microscope included and the results are impressive.

Marques Brownlee is back again to show us what we can expect from leading technology manufacturers next year. This week, Brownlee gains access to the Oppo Find X3 Pro smartphone, which on the surface resembles many of the other flagship phones you may currently have on hand. This phone, however, has a macro lens with a ring of light embedded around it. With a 60x magnification and a f / 3.0 aperture lens, it’s understandable why the camera manufacturer calls this “Microlens” instead of macro.

Brownlee starts showing this specific lens in action and we are shown a gallery of images that he took with the phone. I must say that the results are impressive. I’ve talked about the benefits of trying to see the world through different eyes before, and a camera like this would help with that.

The video contains a complete and in-depth analysis of many of the other features of the phone and is worth watching in full. For those with little time, the second half of the video is where all the microscope action takes place. Brownlee concludes by saying that while having a microscope on a smartphone is a bit of a trick, it is a very good trick that does well. When you compare what Oppo has done with other manufacturers, your macro attempt is light years ahead.

What do you think of this “Microlente”? Would you use this feature? We would love to hear your opinion in the comments below.
