Many people could not help drawing similarities between the 2021 inauguration day and the past. No, they were not comparing with the previous presidential inaugurations, but with the old scenes from “The Simpsons”.
The 2000 episode “Bart to the Future” is a piece of “Back to the Future” – but it reflects our present a lot. In the episode, Lisa Simpson, who becomes president, wears a purple jacket and pearls. On the day of inauguration, Vice President Kamala Harris wore the same outfit.
It was not just the costume that was similar. As Lisa sits in the Oval Office, she says her presidency “has inherited a major budget crisis from President Trump”.

In the past four years, many fans of “The Simpsons” have pointed out that the scheduled show Mr. Trump would one day be president. This episode also accurately predicts that a woman would become one of the most powerful leaders in the United States after her tenure.
The parallels between the animated universe and Inauguration Day don’t end there. In “The Simpsons Movie”, 2007, Tom Hanks gives a voice to himself – someone who is generally considered to be an honest guy and a discreet and kind celebrity. “Hi. I’m Tom Hanks. The US government has lost its credibility, so it’s borrowing a little bit from mine,” jokes Hanks in the episode.
The fans couldn’t help but point out that Hanks performed “Celebrating America” on the opening night. As the host of the star-studded show, Hanks was more or less acting as a spokesman for America – similar to his “credible” Simpsons character, who is the spokesman for a “new” Grand Canyon.
Although the show did not foresee the presentation of Lady Gaga’s national anthem at the opening, predicted elements of his show at the 2017 Super Bowl in 2012. And made other predictions about entertainment before, like with the explosive result of penultimate episode of “Game of Thrones” – two years before it airs.
